Day 3

Today the group will be split into two groups. The first will be going to see our finished project from yesterday and the other will be going into the SET schools. The schools are going to be repaired in order to be up and running for the new school year to start (the children are on summer vacation at the moment). I think it will be a very good day for both groups and we will definitely have a lot of stories to share with one another at the end of the day. I for one, am eager to start to rebuild another life here in Chincha Alta, Peru. Today will be an amazing day no matter what challenges we may need to overcome whether they be the language barrier, physical or emotional. I can’t wait to begin yet another day here. Hasta luego. Just to explain a little about the SET schools. There were 22 of these preschools built after the earthquake of 2007. They were built with the help of Accesso International and the Luke 4 Foundation.

These nursery schools provide early stimulation for 3 month olds to three year olds. They provide an opportunity for Mothers to work and older brothers and sisters to go to school while at the same time assuring the young ones are being stimulated and toilet trained before entering kindergarten.

The government pays for a young teacher to teach but provides no materials or environment for this to happen, most teachers were doing it in their homes before the earthquake and with the destruction of the homes came the need to provide little classrooms.  Pauline

Today I went back to the house we started yesterday to finish it up a bit. We set out a little earlier this morning in order to beat the heat of the day. When we arrived we varnished some more bamboo to be used for the indoor walls then set to work putting them up. The four of us in the morning were hard at work right away and we finished hammering in an entire wall before lunch. After lunch we returned to complete another wall and hopefully the rest of the house. In our first hour this afternoon we completed another entire wall as well as varnished the back of one wall already put up. Then as the others continued to build, I returned to the house to go to the grocery store with a translator to help me out. The others should be returning soon for a swim and afterwards I will be cooking fajitas for supper tonight.  Marissa

This morning I went back to the bamboo house we were working on yesterday and finished washing and painting (varnishing) bamboo and finished nailing the bamboo to make walls. We gave the family a bunch of hats that were donated and we had to get more, they were really excited and had big smiles for us. We also started singing with the family which was fun. The house was almost completed when we left late this afternoon the other workers were finishing the roof. We get to go swimming again which will be exciting because it is really hot and humid. It is hard to think that at home it is freezing because being cold is not a problem here. Sydney

In the morning four of us (Sabyrnna, Kayla, Kristin, and I) went to two daycare schools.  We cleaned out the first one we were sent to and then had to wait for a someone to bring us supplies and directions of what we were to do next.  As we were waiting, I got the translator to teach me some traditional Peruvian dances and we had a lot of fun!  When the man came we had to go to a different school as he had to fix a wall and the roof.  We had a little ways to walk to the next school and something I noticed on the way were all the stray dogs just lying on the side of the road.  When we got to the school we were set to work by painting and priming the walls.  Sabyrnna got most of the tall jobs.  Later Yvonne, Janet the translator and I got to painting pictures on the walls of the school to brighten up the atmosphere more.  Yvonne headed up painting a picture of Winnie the Pooh lying on ABC clouds while I worked on 12 little animals holding papers to show the months of the year.  I think it’s cool how God prepares us for different experiences in life.  Like I never really thought my nack for copying pictures was useful until God gave me the opportunity to use this gift to bring beauty into the lives of the kids who will go to this school.  Angela

The hammer strikes with a resounding ping but unfortunately fails to punch through the hard bamboo. A second stroke also failed to go through; instead the hammer glanced of the nail and struck my thumb, reminding me that even the mightiest of hammers sometimes misses the mark. As I stand staring at my throbbing thumb, I realize that I don’t care. I don’t care that the pain in my thumb makes me want to chop it off, I don’t care that sun beating down on me makes me uncomfortable beyond belief. I don’t care because the pain and discomfort is completely worth it.  It’s worth it because this family has nothing, and the pain I feel is a sacrifice I’m willing to make in order to bring this family a new home.  Jordan

Today we went to daycare places and cleaned them up. The first one we went to we moved everything out of the room and swept the floor. We couldn’t start to paint that daycare because the roof still needed to be fix, so we moved to the next one and we all pained the walls an orange color. After we came back for lunch we headed back out to finish our job. These two kids also came out to help us and the little boy got covered in paint, he was so cute.  Kristin

I am not a youth but very pleased to share some of my experiences assisting on this wonderful Mission Trip. I have been privileged to work along with the youth building a home for a family over the past two days. It has been a truly overwhelming time of emotions to see such desperate situations yet such joy. The Peruvian people are a gentle and compassionate people of strong faith that make it such a pleasure to share their lives in even a little way. They are so very appreciative of all that we do, it warms the heart. The work has been hard but seems so light when working as a team empowered by the knowledge that what little we do, for these families, will mean so very much. The youth have been inspiring in their determination thru hammered fingers, sun burns and the odd cockroach to remain firm and complete all tasks asked of them, and much much more with an attitude of Christ’ Love, smiles and song. Truly an experience that will stay with us for a lifetime! Blessings!  Chris Cole
